Saber King of the Jungle

Super-fiddly art by Denis McLoughlin from Tiger and Hurricane dated 6th April 1968. One thing I liked about McLoughlin's work was his use of texture, but here's an insane amount of detail for something printed on newsprint (the paper being absorbant meaning that the ink spreads a little, thickening the line-work). Look at the detail of the broken running-board of the car (on the left) in the blown-up panel below. Also, the dog eyeing up the sausages hanging out of the bag (on the right).

Jet Ace Logan

Some lovely space art by Brian Lewis. From Tiger, 4th November 1961. I love the thought and detail he's put into these pages, hence the blown-up frame below.

Billy's Boots

Like I mentioned earlier: I'm not keen on sports stories, but I do like John Gillatt's work.  From Lion and Tiger ('No.1 for Excitement!' Apparently.), 28th September 1985.

The Tough Game

I must admit that I was never that keen on sports stories myself. But, I was a fan of Jim Bleach: his work appeared quite regularly for both IPC and DCT.

The Great Thespius

John Gillat illustrates 'The Great Thespius's Christmas Caper' for the Tiger annual 1969.

Border Snatch

These Gerry Embleton pieces come from the Tiger annual 1963. Never really hear much about GE compared to his brother, Ron. Ron Embleton's art was a lot slicker and more 'commercial' I guess? I prefer Gerry's work-it's a bit grittier.

Haven't had any Joe Colquhoun for a while. Here's a strip from Tiger and Hurricane dated 6th April 1968.

Johnny Cougar

From Tiger and Hurricane dated 16th November 1968. Johnny Cougar-The 'Redskin' with the Iron Grip! Ah, the 'good old days' of non-political correctness. Hear Johnny C. exclaim, "Wah!"; "Haga!", "This is heap strange!" and "By Manitou!". Ahem...
Anyway... nice art by John Gillat.

Jet-Ace Logan

Art by the fabulous Brian Lewis, Tiger Annual 1965. I like BL's style. Sometimes it could be a little hit-or-miss and look a little rushed. Could be blamed on deadlines or lack of interest in subject matter... But when he was firing on all cylinders he produced some outstanding work. Check out his Hammer adaptations here. More of his work on my old site here. His work appeared in both 2000AD and Starlord just before he died. I wish he'd stayed around longer so that his work could have been recognised by a new generation of fans.

Saber-King of the Jungle.

Saber-King of the Jungle from Tiger and Hurricane January 4th 1969, with art by Denis McLoughlin. DL used to include such an insane amount of detail in his pages. It's a shame that the art has been printed on newsprint and has lost some of it's definition. It'd be nice to look at the original art...
