The frontispiece for the Lone Star annual no.2 by Ron Turner. Not sure of the year: late 50s-early 60s?

The Racing Car

By Ron Turner. This is from the Lone Star annual. There's no year on the book, but I think it's 1962.

Fireball XL5

Balloon heads. Ron Turner's trying to draw the characters with big heads like their puppet counterparts in the TV show, but subconsciously he's fighting against it. From the Fireball XL5 annual 1967.

Space Ace

I always enjoy looking at Ron Turner's sci-fi work. His future was always SO shiny. This example is from Lone Star, 'Vol 4, No.2' which I think is from the early 1950's, but I may be wrong...

More RS here, here and me old web site here.

Scoop Donovan-War Cameraman

Ron Turner provides Scoop Donovan art for this issue of Film Fun dated, 24th June 1961. In my opinion Turner wasn't a war artist. He had a great style, but his mind wasn't really set to the subject matter. By that I mean that he hasn't really researched the strip all that well. The weapons/uniforms/equipment are an approximation rather than being realistic. What he was really suited to (and excelled in) was sci-fi. He was a master of the hi-tech future.
I like how he renders Scoop's right arm and body as he's swimming under water in the last frame of page one-how it loses definitition and becomes a series of lines. See how he renders things as they recede into the distance like the German artillary and landing craft in frames 10 and 11 on page 2.

Wonder-Car.

This is a nice piece of original Ron Turner art. From Whizzer and Chips? Was just going through my old files and came across this image that I 'borrowed' from the Compalcomics site a while ago. Some of the word balloons have fallen off but you can see the stain from the glue on the pages. I love the way RT drew machinery. Go here to see more of his work. I'd love to see a Space Ace reprint. I'm assuming it's out of copyright now?

Thingumajig.

From Whizzer and Chips dated January 29th 1977. Art by the great Ron Turner, who was (in my opinion) a fantastic sc-fi artist. Seems to be a bit sad seeing him on this kind of earth-bound story. As far as I can remember most of his work appeared in black and white during the 70s. Gone were the days of Rick Random and full-colour Dalek strips. Have a look here for more examples of his work.
