 Commando

Initially appearing in 1961, 4 issues of Commando comics are still being published every fortnight. Check out the website here. There's a free issue for you to sample too.

The comics are printed in a pocket-size format with a glossy, colour, cover and black and white interior art. Here's a small example below, followed by some covers painted by the great Ian Kennedy.

Quick on the Draw

Interior illustrations to a text story found in the Eagle annual, number 5, which I think is from 1956.
Ian Kennedy was in his early 20s when he produced this work. His style isn't quite fully-formed yet, but I can see a hint of it in the second illustration, especially the guy firing from behind the rock.

Battler Britton and the Pusser's Spitfire

I was sad to hear that Ian Kennedy recently passed-away at the age of 89. There goes another one of my childhood heroes. This short story was from Thriller Picture Library number 265, published in 1959. He drew this in his late twenties. It's interesting to see that some of his style is established and recognisable, but there are some things he hasn't quite refined yet. He's still working out how to render some elements, like the sea on page seven and the sea exploding at the bottom of page eleven is a bit of an experiment.

Thanks for all the wonderful art, Ian.

Q-Ship

Ian Kennedy provides the art for "Q-Ship" from Battle Action, dated 20th January 1979.

It's interesting to note that the painted art on the top left of page one isn't by IK. I wonder if it's an old War or Battle Picture Library cover, re-purposed for this story?

Ian Kenendy, still going strong and providing covers for  Commando Comics.

Here's a look at the black and white art so we can see his pen lines.
