 Martin Rattler

Pat Nicolle provides some lovely pen-work to this strip which appeared in the 28th May1960, edition of Lion.

I've isolated a couple of the creatures so we can oggle the textures.

 Commando

Initially appearing in 1961, 4 issues of Commando comics are still being published every fortnight. Check out the website here. There's a free issue for you to sample too.

The comics are printed in a pocket-size format with a glossy, colour, cover and black and white interior art. Here's a small example below, followed by some covers painted by the great Ian Kennedy.

 Treasury of British Comics

Thought I'd better do my bit to help promote (older) British comics. Check out Treasury of British Comics that's run by Rebellion, the publishers of 2000AD.

 Tiffany Jones

This is a newspaper strip illustrated by Pat Tourrant. Not sure of the year, but the strip ran from 1964 to 1977.

I found the art here at the Smithsonian

 Transformers

From Transformers issue 261, March 17th 1990. Art by Staz Johnson. I thought I'd throw this one in as I've just noticed that Mr. Johnson is a fan of the Blog.

Apologies for the smaller images, as this was sourced from scans found elsewhere.

You can find more of his newer art here

 The Amazing Jack Wonder

Today we have art by Bill Lacey from Lion, dated 30th April 1966.

 Johnny Red

Can you spot the mistake? John Cooper provides the art for this episode from Battle Action Force, 31st March 1984.

2000AD

Some original art by Brian Lewis for issue 75 of 2000AD, dated 29th July 1978. His Dredd looks a bit shonky, but I love how he rendered the combined Landraider/Killdozer vehicle. He would have been great for 2000AD, but he died in 1978 after only contributing a handful of covers for this and Starlord, plus a Dan Dare story.

Captain Condor and the Planet of Treachery

Steve Dillon was in his late teens when he contributed these illustrations to a text story that appeared in the Lion Holiday Special in 1980.

 Plug-Spot

Following on from the Eric Bradbury art in the previous post. I thought I'd plug the latest releases from Bear Alley Books which also contain his work.

No, I'm not on commission...

The Terrible Trail to Taggart's Treasure

Eric Bradbury drew these pages for the 21st July, 1973 edition of Shiver and Shake.

Quick on the Draw

Interior illustrations to a text story found in the Eagle annual, number 5, which I think is from 1956.
Ian Kennedy was in his early 20s when he produced this work. His style isn't quite fully-formed yet, but I can see a hint of it in the second illustration, especially the guy firing from behind the rock.
