Thunderbirds

BEM! Bug-eyed monster, yay! Some wonderful colour work by the late-great Frank Bellamy. From TV21 dated 2nd December 2067. Er, I mean 1967. Amazing to think that Gerry Anderson's creation is still entertaining kids with a new, updated version recently airing on British TV. You can still find FB's run on Thunderbirds out there in reprinted volumes of TV21 comics. If you can, try and find original copies of TV21 because the strip was printed larger than it is in the reprints. Your eyes will explode with delight (maybe).

Frank Bellamy. It's interesting how some artists go 'beyond the call of duty' with their art. That first frame would have looked perfectly fine with TB 2's shadow as a solid. But FB must have spent a while creating those squiggles to give the frame a bit of extra 'oomph'! Something extra for the eye to dwell on...

Mick Anglo

Martin Asbury. Anyone know how MA created that bubbly texture behind Apollo in frame one and the planet in the last frame? Would it be something like soap or washing up liquid mixed in with the colour?

Swade

A Western piece from the pen of Frank Bellamy. I can almost hear the Ennio Morricone soundtrack on this one. I love the pen work for the hands on the final page. This originally appeared in the first issue of Ally Sloper magazine in 1976. FB had specially drawn this strip for the magazine. It must have been one of the last full strips he drew. By the time it saw print, he was gone.

Heros the Spartan

Frank Bellamy again. Eagle, 3rd October 1964. Next full moon I want everyone to gather in an open field, strip down to their cream and brown Y-Fronts; drink the sacred scrumpy and entreat the Ancients with this chant: Reprint! Reprint! Reprint!

Fraser of Africa

By Frank Bellamy for the Eagle dated 15th October 1960. In this series Bellamy took the unusual step of doing away with full colour and utilising a limited palette to evoke the heat and dust of the African plains.

Frank Bellamy creates page one with Don Harley on page two. I love the texture that Bellamy applies on the 'Nagrab' in the first frame.

The Raid

Frank Bellamy provides spot illustrations for a text piece entitled, The Raid for the Boys' World annual 1966. Red induces a sense of danger/urgency and some nice textures in this one. I like the moody night sky above the landing craft.
