Secret of the Microverse

Kevin O'Neil supplies the cover for this week's issue dated, 26th November 1977.

Space Ranger

An advertisement from 1980 with art by Ron Smith. It's interesting to note that he's made no attempt to beef up the Rom character. I seem to remember the toy looked particularly unimpressive and weedy. Some of you may remember the long-running Rom: Spaceknight comic from Marvel in the US?

Booby Trap!

Some magnificent work by Ian Kennedy. Battle, dated 24th January 1981.

The Highwayman

Not exactly comic art per se, but Charles Keeping's work did turn up in comics from time-to-time. Here's an article with more art for you to view. I think this originally came out in 1981 and reprinted here, in the School Journal in '85.

2000AD Sci-Fi Special

A nice Mick McMahon cover for the 2019 2000AD Sci-Fi Special.

Hm, I don't know of many artists whose style has mutated so much from year-to-year. I'll have to do a page of comparisons at some point.

Inifinity Magazine

Check out Infinity magazine. It often has features on British comics. The issue pictured has an article about Battle Picture Weekly.

The editor has a pretty idiosyncratic style, but the magazine's a pretty good read if you're a comics, TV or film geek. You can buy back-issues from their website, but the digital versions are as cheap as chips.

Then and Now

A back page feature drawn by Jim Watson. Warlord dated, 2nd November 1974.

The Incredible Hulk

Cover by Steve Dillon. The Incredible Hulk, dated 28th April 1982.

Q-Ship

Ian Kennedy provides the art for "Q-Ship" from Battle Action, dated 20th January 1979.

It's interesting to note that the painted art on the top left of page one isn't by IK. I wonder if it's an old War or Battle Picture Library cover, re-purposed for this story?

Ian Kenendy, still going strong and providing covers for  Commando Comics.

Here's a look at the black and white art so we can see his pen lines.

Also, check out The Art of Ian Kennedy. Available from the DC Thomson site.

Heartbreak Hotel

A cover illustration by Duncan Fegredo for Heartbreak Hotel, number 5, September/October 1988.

And something from Dave Gibbons from the same issue:

Improve Your Chess

Hello, dear reader. Apologies for the wee break in the service! Anyway, back to it:

Some nice Ionicus spot illustrations for the "Improve Your Chess" article in the Daily Mail Book for Boys annual  1961.
